Statement of Intent, application to OSU BFA program
I am applying to the B. F. A. program, planning on specializing in painting and drawing. To be honest, I see this application more as a choice necessary for my own personal growth and the expansion and cultivation of my artistic abilities. I do not currently have any specific employment goals in mind. I feel that any career I eventually end up in will be an extension of the direction I find in my studies and exploration. I have had an interest in drawing since I was in elementary school, and kept it up as a hobby throughout my childhood and adolescence. Up until recently, my focus has been more of an illustrative one, both in my own techniques, as well as in my taste in art. Just through the foundation courses alone, I feel that my horizons have been broadened--I have been exposed to and influenced by other art students and instructors, as well as introduced to artists, movements and works that I had never really found the right context to appreciate before. I am still more interested in two-dimensional forms of expression, however, and so have chosen the painting/drawing focus. I have especially been interested in depicting the human form, but also intend on a more varied subject matter and a greater concentration on more formal concerns. There are also many questions in regards to my own work and about art in general that I am struggling to better resolve. I feel that I am starting to move into my own personal mode of expression, and entering the B.F.A. program will give me the best opportunities and resources to truly find my place as an artist.
